Pro Bowl is cure for what ails NFL stars after disappointing year

KAPOLEI, Hawaii -- The sun melted into the ocean on a flawless Thursday evening as a cool breeze brushed the burnt skin of everyone near the pool. This is supposed to be perfect, and in many ways it is, a sense validated by the laughter coming from the bar area. Yet underneath these smiles, behind the T-shirt worn by Denver Broncos coach John Fox that reads, "It is what it is," there's a lingering feeling that these men here just can't kick. It throbs. And it's fresh. And it just won't go away.

"Coming to Hawaii might be the best cure for the sting I feel," said Fox, taking a breath between stories that he's been telling a circle of men that includes his quarterback, Peyton Manning. "I still have my stitches in. My scar is going to be there, and these guys probably feel very similar to me."

These guys, as Fox calls them, include a wide range of players and coaches, from New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning to Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy to Seattle Seahawks rookie Russell Wilson, each one using this week at the Pro Bowl as an attempt at therapeutic relief from a season that none believe should be over for them.

Some people come to places like this and lose all motivation. But how can you lose motivation when a television in the background of the bar is airing sports news from the mainland, where the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers are preparing for the Super Bowl?

"I'm very happy for Coach (Jim) Harbaugh," said Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, who was mentored by the 49ers coach during their time at Stanford together. "But I wish I was the one getting to play against him in the Super Bowl."

Maybe it's true for every year, but this postseason's obituaries seem to read particularly harsh. And as a result, these men are having a particularly tough time letting this season go. "All of us have had major disappointments in our seasons," Fox said. From the Packers falling short of their Super Bowl anticipations to the Seahawks' season coming to an end despite a 20-point comeback against the Falcons to Atlanta's meltdown against the 49ers in their own season-ending loss, the league's top names can all look back on this season with very legitimate "what if" questions.

For the Broncos, whose sting might be the worst of the bunch, especially after that double-overtime loss to the Ravens, they are at least in this together. Manning flew his two backup quarterbacks, Brock Osweiler and Caleb Hanie, to Hawaii for this week's festivities. It has allowed all of them, with Fox included, to talk about the aftershock of a season fallen short.

So while it might look like Fox is far from unhappy (he looks more like the Mayor of Honolulu around these parts), he is nonetheless quietly finding more desire to get his team to the Super Bowl next season.

"When you get to hang out with Pro Bowl players that have had outstanding seasons, when you get to talk to them socially, as well as in the meeting rooms, it reenergizes you as a football coach," Fox said. On Monday, Manning urged the NFL to move the Pro Bowl to after the Super Bowl so the Pro Bowl selections from both of the final two teams can also make this trip. Whether that happens remains to be seen -- an unlikely scenario given the league's desire to benefit from the ratings of a week when interest in the NFL is high. And as a result, there will remain a strange and interesting dynamic in Hawaii. While everyone here is most certainly making the most of their time, nobody really wants to come back. That's nothing against the game or the week or the paradise where it all happens.

Instead, the reason is very simple, a sentiment shared by everyone. "We'd much rather be playing in the Super Bowl," Fox said. "And we'll do whatever we can to try to make that happen next season instead."

NFL Championship Weekend - How It Goes Down

Well fans, here it is, two games to decide who goes to the Super Bowl. Three of these four teams are no stranger to the magnitude of this game. The Atlanta Falcons happen to be the only team who did not participate in "Conference Championship Sunday" last year. They have a most difficult match-up with Colin Kaepernick & the red hot San Francisco 49ers at 3:00. On the other side, the rematch of last years heartbreaking (if you are a Ravens fan) AFC Championship game. Ray Lewis looks down the barrel of what could be his final gun once again as the Ravens take their show on the road once again to New England. After watching both of my super bowl picks, the Broncos & Packers, go down in horrific fashion, I had some time to mull over the remaining four teams and how they matched up against them.

In the early game, the Atlanta Falcons will once again be in the comfort of the Georgia Dome when the niners come to town. How well they'll do against the legs and arm of one Kaepernick is the main question. This one person, along with the emergence of the underrated Crabtree, has turned is team from a balanced offense with a superb defense, to a powerhouse, score at will type offense with a superb defense. Poor Alex Smith, regardless of how this game goes, his days in San Fran are done. But there will be plenty of time in the offseason to talk about that. Lets talk more Sunday.

The Falcons can not have another half like the 2nd one against Seattle or they will find themselves watching the Super Bowl instead of playing in it. If the team that played in the first half comes to play, then this could be a game of epic proportions. BUT!.... I am not expecting that to happen. I am glad to see the Falcons get over the hump, but the show stops here. Too much dominance on both sides of the ball.

HeartLess picks: 49ers 27 - 10

We ask ourselves the same question each and every round of the playoffs year in, and year out. What team has the tools, the scheme, the execution, to rattle Tom Brady & the New England Patriots? He made his 344 yard, 3 TD effort against the Texans look easy last week. Could it be the Ravens? Who knows...I sure don't. After watching two days of jaw-dropping, twitter flooding football last weekend, anything is truly possible.

Stopping the Patriots, however, seems almost impossible. These guys have been the constant in great football and they're looking to finally add another ring to the collection after losing to the Giants (hahahahaha) their last two times out. They're

Ray Lewis and company appear like they're up to the task. The defense bends........heavily..... but comes up with the big play when needed. And I know it pains America to say this...but come on, who throws a better deep ball than Flacco? The balls thrown to Torrey Smith have been right on the money. If Flacco can get the deep ball going, who knows what could happen. Also, Ray Rice.....hold on to the football!!!!!

Karma works in mysterious ways. America was denied the media madness of "The Harbaugh Bowl" last year only to forget about it because of the Giants-Patriots rematch. I think what went around then, comes back now and the Brothers Harbaugh get their dream match-up. Bring on the press, its goin' down!

HeartLess picks: Ravens 23-20.....see what I did there...

Just How Bad was the Dallas Cowboys Season?

We all look back at our favorite team's season & we always ask. Just how good were we? What do others think of our "success" or "failures"? Well in the case of the Dallas Cowboys, Adolf Hitler.....was not very pleased....take a look...

...Poor Cowboys

NFL Divisional Playoffs - How it goes down

Now things have gotten real. 6 of the 8 teams in this round were in this very round last year. The two newbies being Seattle & Atlanta. Saturday's evening games are between the Baltimore Ravens visiting the Denver Broncos at 4:30 (CBS). At 8pm (Fox) the Green Bay Packers to travel 49ers. In Sunday's match-ups you'll see the Seattle Seahawks head on down to the Georgia Dome to play the Atlanta Falcons at 1pm (Fox). The last game of the weekend will have the Houston Texans leaving the comfort of Reliant Stadium to hit the always frozen & welcoming Gillette Stadium. I'll give you my run-down on who wins...and why.

Ravens @ Broncos:

Gosh, America its really hard picking against Ray Lewis after the emotional ride he took the world through this past weekend at his last home game as a Raven. Boldin also stepped it up a ton in the second half. Anything Flacco threw up, he pulled down. It was a thing of beauty to watch. Not too sure that will work in the thin Denver air though. Major thing though. Can Ray Rice hold on to the ball. The two fumbles he gave away were total drive killers! I don't know people.....It will be very tough to top the Manning-led Broncos who have been on a complete roll. Although the playoffs are not Peyton Manning's specialty, I think whoopin' the Broncos put on the Ravens a few weeks ago was indicative enough on how this game is probably going to go. I'll say the Ravens put forth a better effort this time around though.

HeartLess Picks: Denver Broncos 24-20

Packers @ 49ers:

Anyone else out there think that the winner of this game probably gets the nod as team most likely to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl? Just me? Nahhhhh, couldn't be. But really America, I was hoping this would be the NFC Championship game next week, but I guess another great Divisional Round game in San Fran will do. (Remember last years Epic Saints/Niners game?....of course ya do) Now earlier this year the Niners ran smack over the Packers en route to a 30-22 victory in the early stages of the season. Frank Gore looked purely unstoppable down the stretch, racking up 112 off of just 16 carries. Fast forward to Saturday. Gore still is running like a man on a mission but there's another threat on the ground. Kaepernick. The 2nd year man makes his first playoff start and all eyes will be on him. As they should be, if he can guide the 49ers through a clock-controlled game, they will win. BUT, if they let Aaron Rodgers get hot and find a way to protect him, he'll light that secondary up. Too many weapons for him not to. This has to be the game of the week. No other way around it.

HeartLess Picks: Green Bay Packers 27-24

Seahawks @ Falcons:

I am sure that we all watched the Seahawks game last week. And I'm sure we know how that game turned out and why it turned out that way. No need to even bring it up here, because now we'll see if the Seahawks are a team that's ready to take a giant leap into "Elite-Team" status or is it a "team on the rise". This game will answer the same questions for the Falcons. Is it finally Matt Ryan's time to lead his team to that next frontier? I think it is. The Falcons are just a real complete team that is healthy beyond means right now. If they can out ball Seattle's secondary, this one should be a close but winnable game.

HeartLess Picks: Falcons 21-10

Texans @ Patriots:

I am almost positive this was the LAST place the Houston Texans wanted to travel to after their win last week. They're probably still hurting after slipping so badly during the month of December. But hey, it is what it is and now here comes good ol Tom Brady and the New England Patriots ready to do what they do best in the playoffs.....win. I highly doubt this game will be the blowout the Patriots served the Texans earlier in December, but unless the Texans find a way to contain the very efficient Patriot offense, they don't stand a chance.

HeartLess Picks: Patriots 34 - 24

Hate to say I told you so but....

....It would seem that someone over here knows their football. 4 out of 4 on WildCard Weekend. Check the posts!!!! Ok I won't gloat too much. These games were a little too easy to pick. QB issues, a team that just wasn't ready, injuries left & right. Too easy for someone that knows the game. Now the divisional round games will be alot more challenging. The 1 & 2 seeds of each conference have had their week of rest. Time to see if that very rest turns into rust. It has happened in almost every postseason. Lets see what happens this week. My official picks, coming soon.

Oh, and....one more thing.....RG3...had ZERO business in the game after he showed SIGNIFICANT signs of being really banged up. Now he has some rehabbing to do.

Kirk Cousins....you're on the clock.....

One day....

I have a dream, that one day, a D1 HBCU will rise up from the pit we are in now, and make some noise on a national scale. Watching this FCS National title game on ESPN2 between perennial powers Sam Houston State & North Dakota State, I just know one of our schools in the MEAC will pull it together. I also hope that the SWAC will grow up from their ancient ways & send their champion to the playoffs.

NFL Wild Card Weekend - How It Goes Down....

First Off...I know we all are happy in America that the Dallas Cowboys, once again, are left out of the playoffs. So I know the playoffs will be a joy to watch.

My NFC wild card predictions I made a few weeks back came to pass as the Minnesota Vikings & Seattle Seahawks got in. (Don't believe me? Well You can ask my brother @Musiqn_myveins if I'm lyin. tell him @KiD_HeartLess sent ya).

But anyways here's to this weekends games. Starting with Houston & Cincinati. This one here is a tough one. Bengals are hot, Texans are fading rapidly. Can Houston flip the switch & turn it on. I'm going to say.....YES. The people have seen what this team can do and I believe that team is going to show up. Maybe they only survive this weekend, but I don't think they're one & done.

HeartLess picks: Houston Texans 21-17.

Next we have Saturday's night game: Minnesota & Green Bay. Adrian Peterson has terrorized the Packers for more than 400 yards on the ground in the first two meetings but I don't think they'll allow him to go off once again. Christian Ponder has played very well the last 4 games of the season, but will it be enough to out-do Aaron Rodgers again? I doubt this.

HeartLess picks: Green Bay Packers 35-21

Sundays early game pits the Baltimore Ravens against the Indianapolis Colts. This game is sure to be a physical one. Ray Lewis is sure to have a few layers of rust on him after being out for so many weeks, but look for him to shake it off in the second half. Andrew Luck  is having a dream seasons for the Colts. But the dream shall end here.

HeartLess picks: Baltimore Ravens 17-13

The last game of Wildcard Weekend is probably the one all of America will be tuning in to see. The other two of the three rookie sensation quarterbacks face-off as Russel Wilson & the Seattle Seahawks travel across the country to see RGIII & the Washington Redskins. People can try to make a case for an evenly matched game on both sides all they want, but let's be serious here. Seattle's defense WILL be the deciding factor in why the Seahawk's will win. They are prepped and ready for the read option, and they will execute. RGIII will be more healthy than he has been in previous weeks, but I don't think it will be enough.

HeartLess picks: Seattle Seahawks 31-24
